It was very hard at the beginning," Enthen said. The rendering software itself is improving by leaps and bounds, too. For example, there's Vray , a 3D-rendering software that enables different kinds of views, from "coarse to crisp," with the adjustment of a single slider switch. Ikea, for one, has long since created its own in-house system which integrates that technology. With those new custom tools, it's been able to create a massive backlog of 25,000 ultra-hi-res images to pull fromimages that can work small-scale in the catalog, or blown up big on the side of a showroom. Each of those individual models are made in four resolutions, which can be swapped in or out depending on whether it's necessary to see the threads on the sofa upholstery or just get the look of the scene.

Its specialty is something called the Light Tile. Its essentially a grid of LEDs embedded in resin, forming an LED blanket that's less than 1 millimeter thick. The blanket can be wrapped inside a product to make it glow while drawing very little power. Over at the Design LED Products website, you can see all sorts of ways Ikea could use the lights: bulbless lamps where the lampshade itself lights up; curvy, sculptural overhead lights that look straight out of a modern art museum. The technology can also illuminate LED screens (like televisions or pocket gadgets). The design possibilities seem endless. We could see see Light Tiles making their way into Ikeas kitchen and office finishes, the bookshelves, and even the Poang chairs.

It was also just one small part of AbleGamers' strategy to reach developers and players. Over the years, the charity has hosted scores of accessibility arcades, made inside contacts at major developers and publishers and attended conferences and events such as the Penny Arcade Expo. Steve Spohn At PAX East four or five years ago, AbleGamers even made inroads at the notoriously insular Grand Theft Auto creator, Rockstar Games. "[AbleGamers co-founder Mark Barlet and I] were at their booth," says Chief Operations Officer Steve Spohn, "and an individual who worked there had taken a pamphlet that we had drawn up to show developers to introduce what we were doing and how we could help." "The dude from Rockstar took the paper, said 'Thank you,' didn't look at me because I'm a wheelchair user completely ignored that I existed grabbed the paper, said 'Sure I'll look at it later,' and then turned around, crumpled it up, threw it in the trashcan and walked away." The pair immediately tweeted about the incident, receiving hundreds of retweets, and that very night executives from Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive were calling to ask what had happened. "From there we got invited out to Rockstar's headquarters, which you know, Rockstar doesn't invite anybody out to their headquarters," Spohn says. "[We] got to give some lessons on accessibility. Got to help them design the accessibility of L.A. Noire and really help them get on track for Max Payne 3. We sort of helped them out and they turned around and helped us out with PAX East booth space." This is just one of the many cases when AbleGamers got an inside track at major game companies although normally it does so more organically with people at lower levels taking an interest in the cause and then championing it from the inside.
